Pushing drone technology further - one expert UAS pilot at a time.
What is an Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS)?
A UAS, or drone, is much more than just the aircraft. It includes the platform itself, the payload it carries, the onboard autopilot and avionics, the communication links that allow control and data transmission, and the remote pilot or crew who operate it. Together, these elements form a complete system designed to safely and effectively conduct flight operations.
What are UAS used for?
Uncrewed Aircraft Systems are used anywhere you need to gather information or perform a task from the air quickly, safely, and often more cost-effectively than traditional methods. Some missions use fixed-wing aircraft to cover large areas efficiently, such as mapping farmland or surveying infrastructure. Others use multirotor aircraft for close-up inspections, search-and-rescue support, or aerial photography where precise maneuvering is critical. At Kansas State University Salina, we operate more than twenty platforms, including fixed-wing, multirotor, and hybrid aircraft, to support a wide range of missions. Our students and researchers use them for agricultural research, 3D mapping, utility and bridge inspections, emergency response exercises, wildlife surveys, and even testing for emerging technologies like cargo delivery and advanced air mobility aircraft.
What is a payload?
A payload is any equipment mounted on the aircraft to collect data or perform a task. This may include electro-optical cameras, thermal imagers, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors for agriculture, LiDAR scanners for 3D mapping, or even radar and air-sampling devices for specialized research.
When is a Remote Pilot Certificate required?
Anyone flying a UAS for work or any other non-recreational purpose must hold an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. This includes commercial photography, infrastructure inspection, mapping, surveying, or training students for credit. Recreational flights that are purely for fun do not require Part 107, but pilots must pass the FAA TRUST test and follow community-based safety guidelines.
What are the key rules under Part 107?
Part 107 allows for operations of small UAS under 55 pounds but includes important limitations. Flights must not fly higher than 400 feet above ground level unless operating near a structure, and the aircraft must stay within visual line of sight. Operations are permitted only during daylight or civil twilight unless the pilot has completed night training and complies with lighting requirements. Flights over people, over moving vehicles, or in controlled airspace require either compliance with FAA performance categories or prior authorization, which can be obtained through the LAANC system. Part 107 also limits the maximum ground speed to 100 miles per hour and requires that unmanned aircraft yield to manned aircraft at all times.
Does RC experience help with flying UAS?
Yes. Experience with radio-controlled aircraft is valuable, as it helps develop the situational awareness and motor skills needed for manual flight. Even with autonomous systems, a remote pilot must be able to take over and safely land the aircraft when needed.
What is a COA?
A Certificate of Authorization, or COA, is an FAA approval that allows a public organization such as a university or public safety agency to conduct specific UAS operations. Kansas State University maintains several COAs to support research flights, training activities, and advanced testing that go beyond the standard limits of Part 107.
What is NAS?
NAS stands for the National Airspace System, the network of controlled and uncontrolled airspace, airports, navigation facilities, and air traffic services that support aviation in the United States.
What kinds of careers are available in UAS today?
The industry now supports a wide range of careers in flight operations, mission planning, data analysis, geospatial mapping, engineering, maintenance, regulatory compliance, precision agriculture, public safety, and even emerging fields such as advanced air mobility and drone cargo delivery.
Where can I learn more or get certified?
Kansas State University Salina offers bachelor’s degrees in UAS flight and operations, certificates and minors in UAS data analysis and flight operations, and professional training for Part 107 preparation and industry certifications. Learn more about the part 107 training.
